Seen & heard
- Seen: A fallen soldier was honored by his relatives and friends Thursday night at Paddy’s, an Irish pub off Raeford Road. Owner Paddy Gibney saluted the soldier and two others who died recently and sang the national anthem.
Salvation Army Christmas Fund
- The J.P. Riddle Charitable Foundation, a generous contributor the past several years, leads the way today as the Bill Shaw Salvation Army Christmas Fund grows by more than $34,000 and approaches $240,000. Six others join this year’s $1,000 club in a big
day for the fund. Our thanks to ABN One, Amchick, Carolina Cardiology, Mr. and Mrs. Curtiss Davis, Paddy Gibney, and John and Susan Henley, all of whom donated $1,000.
Put Another Dime In The Jukebox
- Paddy Gibney, owner of Paddy’s Irish Pub, waxes nostalgic when it comes to the jukebox. “I grew up in a time when the jukebox was the only place you could hear music, other than radio,” Gibney said. His bar, also on Raeford Road, has a digital jukebox that is
connected to an online song database. “I love the old-fashioned jukeboxes where you’d have to mash E-3,” he said. “There was a certain romance to that. In those days you’d play Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll,’ and the whole place would light up.”
L.B. Floyd Children's Classic Golf Tournament
-
Sean McDaniel, Paddy Gibney, John Haskins and Justin Terranova teamed for a captain’s choice score of 54 to win the 13th annual L.B. Floyd Children’s Classic golf tournament, but the real winners are ill children and their families who too often find themselves at
Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. This year’s event, staged on April 11 at Cypress Lakes Golf Course, raised $225,000 in cash and in-kind donations. Take away the in-kind donations, and Friends of Children generated about $100,000. The event has raised more
than $1.5 million since its inception.

Sorting out the problems..........Coming around to recycling
-
Paddy Gibney, owner of Paddy’s: An Irish Public House on Raeford Road, doesn’t have a problem with the law. He thinks recycling is good. “It’s the arbitrary way in which they went about it,” Gibney said. “We’ll do what we have to do, but they just passed the law with no real
direction on how to implement it.” Gibney said he just recently started recycling. He said officials told him the plan needs to be in place by April. “But I’ll tell you the hardest thing for us,” he said. “We do such a volume — we’re going to be filled up every night. I finally found
someone who does pick up four times a week. And we have some great customers, but how do you get people who have been drinking to throw the bottles into the blue trash cans?” Gibney says he can absorb the extra costs of the recycling service but feels for those who can’t.
Advice For The Holiday Weekend
-
But why stay in, when March 17 is the day to celebrate all things Irish? Just ask Paddy Gibney, an Irish musician who has made Fayetteville his home. As long as you’re a fun-loving lad or lass, Gibney will be more than glad to invite you to his new home — his new bar.
Paddy’s: An Irish Public House, in the former Wheeler’s on Raeford Road, will be open and in full operation for St. Patrick’s Day. This is also why you’ll want to wear something green this weekend. Apparently Irish people like to pinch those who don’t wear green on St.
Patrick’s Day, a hilariously sadistic practice that has found popularity among non-Irish pinchers. So, save yourself the physical torture and harassment, and wear something green. It probably wouldn’t hurt to have a designated driver handy either — good advice for any weekend.
Cheers To Ireland
- Paddy Gibney..........For those staying in town, by far the biggest party happens at Wheelers tonight with the “Shamrock and Roll Party” with Paddy Gibney and Bill Ayerbe. Gibney, who is from Dublin, Ireland, knows more drinking songs than anyone you know
and is our local St. Pat’s authority. In fact, he’s been singing and playing St. Pat’s parties since March 10. The party and music start around 10 p.m. If you miss the duo tonight, catch them Saturday night at The Mash House.
